2012Projects // Alcoy, Spain
Now that English camp is over we have the opportunity to spend our mornings helping out a family at the church who is struggling financially. The husband hasn’t been able to find steady work and the wife doesn’t make much. They have three children who attended the English camp. We are repainting the interior and helping them refurnish the girls’ bedroom. Today we headed in with masking tape and putty to prep. Tomorrow we should be able to start painting.
We had a little incident at the camp…. The weekend after it was over we found out that a couple of the children had lice, and it could have spread. (Cue instant head itching. Ewww.) We all checked each other over and thank God none of the team had it. Some of the girls stayed behind to treat the children who had it and help “delice” the home as well.
This week and next we all have conversational English classes at night. I had a familiar group of three gals who I’ve been getting to know. Edu, who I live with, Rosa, and Tamara, who is a culinary student and a little older than me. The second hour I had a 14 year old boy. We worked on animal vocab and then played word yahtzee.
I was thinking today about how God’s plans for our lives are so well aligned, better than we can imagine. In Mexico I learned Spanish, which helped me soooo much here. I am so thankful to be (semi :) ) bi-lingual and it’s been a blessing to be able to communicate easily. This summer all my photography jobs fell through, enabling me to go on this trip. I didn’t get promoted to the waitressing job I honestly didn’t want at my old job, so I ended up working for my dad (Hi dad! I love you!) and learned a little about painting, spackling, taping and the like which in it’s small way has made the work here smoother because it’s familiar. And he pays me more than my restaurant job did ; )
This weekend we are taking a group trip to Javea, a pebble beach on the coast. It’s been fun getting to know the team better now that we are not chasing after children all day :)
I am pretty much over the cold I had. I think some of my old health problems might be creeping back with the change in schedule and diet…. Please pray that my energy level goes up and the problems don’t come back:} I am taking my vitamins and medicine, eating pretty healthy (I live with a swimming instructor and we share a love for healthy eating and salads!) and getting a decent amount of exercise in. I’ve started walking the stairs instead of the elevator. 6 flights up is as good as squats in my book :P
Thank you all for your prayers! I love you all! I wish you were here to share this experience with me!
