2 0 1 2 → A Year in Review

2  0  1  2

January was spent body in the classroom mind on a more exciting life anywhere but Northern Michigan.

February I continued to work, study and dream. My wonderful group of friends kept me grounded.

March applications were due, and so were papers. Graduation seemed too far away.

April I quietly turned 19. Road trip to an island off the coast of Georgia, Florida’s freshwater springs and the backcountry of Ohio was a much-needed break.

May I had exhausted my search for a photography internship, so decided to run away to Spain. Oh, and graduated from college.

June was bonfires and beaches. I crammed in as much Northern Michigan summer as I could before heading to Spain.

July I played with 5 and 6 year olds, helped high school kids and businessmen practice their English, and consumed my year’s supply of olive oil in less than a month.

August I wandered through the palaces of Granada, dodged jellyfish with Meghan, and stood in awe of the wonders in Barcelona.

September I cam back to Michigan, lost, and found myself in New York.

October I worked, got lost on the subway, worked, drank lattes in corner cafes, and worked a little more.

November I made friends and saw my first show on Broadway.

December I saw Christmas come in the city. I found a job for the new year.

I came back to the Mitten for the holidays, and here I am now. Looking back I can laugh at my impatience and fretting. He really does work all things for good for those who love Him. I’ve learned so much this year, especially to abide in Christ, to wait, to be still, to trust in His timing. I’m heading back to the city in January to start a new job, a lot of things are still “TBD” but my mind can rest. It’s funny when people ask “So I bet you always dreamed of living in the city?” because I haven’t. It was never even an idea, New York? Take me south to the warmer extremities! It’s crowded, expensive and always busy. But crowded with interesting+dynamic people, expensive because you are in an amazing area with endless opportunity, and always busy with something fun+fascinating. Here’s to another crazy year filled with my plans that “fall through”, turning into something better. 2  0  1  3.

Mark and Ani // My Friends are all getting married!

Weddings, Engagements, New Relationships, Breakups…. Tis the season? It seems like everyone I know is getting pegged by cupid (or the opposite) about now ;) I can think of 4 weddings in the past month of friends from Middle and High school years. People getting engaged. New girlfriends. New boyfriends. Maybe it’s summer love or maybe it’s just that time of life. Regardless, I was so thrilled to celebrate with one of my best friends yesterday as she and her new husband joined their lives together.

Ani and I have been friends for about 10 years now. It started back when I parted my hair religiously in the the center and wore polo shirts like I was paid to. Ani was, and is, a curly-headed outgoing little girl full of smiles and laughs. We hit it off from the first day while she was cleaning up after her new puppy that had an accident at the waiting room at her mom’s clinic where I was waiting for my mom. Since then we’ve shared lots of laughs, done plenty of stupid things together, and stayed up late talking about boys, family, college and everything in between. After high school she headed off to Florida for college and I went to Mexico. Not really the best way to keep a friendship alive. Despite the distance, her changing schools, my living in 3 different countries we’ve managed to stay close over the past few years unlike some of our high school buddies and I still love her to death.

When I left for Spain in June I made her promise not to let me found out via facebook if if Mark popped the question. About 3 weeks into my trip I got a facebook message…. ;) A few days later we got a chance to talk and she told me I’d better start shopping for a dark blue dress. =) I was originally going to be the photographer as well as bridesmaid, but she and Mark ended up hiring someone so I would be able to enjoy the party and not have to worry about pictures which was a good thing as an hour before pictures were supposed to start we were still packing her suitcases with uncurled hair! =P Of course I still brought it along, and amidst the flurry of activity and prep was at least able to take just a few photos.

The night before us bridesmaids, Ani, her brothers and Austin went to Mac City to see what we could find… Apparently even Labor Day Weekend they shut down at 10pm but we made our own good time between a few tee shirt shops, fudge, planking on fountains and being slightly ridiculous.

The morning of. I was so busy that the camera was only out for a few minutes but here are a few shots.

The reception and ceremony were held outdoors on Mullet Lake at her grandpa’s house. Everything was simple and beautiful, with lots of candlelight and a dessert reception. They each wrote their own vows, and in place of a unity candle did a sand ceremony. Ani’s two “little” brothers walked her down the aisle, and I was tearing up as they gave her bigs hugs as they went back to their seats. I was able to hold it in for the rest of the night, until Tosha’s Maid-of-Honor and Sister speech and I was grabbing for the napkins off the cake table.

“And there is no combination of words I could say
But I will still tell you one thing
We’re better together.”

Luke and Rose // Charleviox, MI Wedding Photographer

Rose and Luke were happily married August 18th at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Charleviox. Rose had asked me earlier this spring to be their photographer so I planned my trip to Spain so I would be back in time to be able to shoot the wedding. My second wedding on my own, the butterflies were still firmly placed in my stomach. The nervousness didn’t leave until I got a message on Facebook from Rose yesterday.

Thank you so much for the pictures!!!!! They arrived just today! You did an amazing job- we were so lucky to have you!
Lots of love!
Rose

Rose was a glowing bride. I have so many pictures of her just smiling, smiling, smiling and giving hugs all around. Luke is her strong and quiet man, and they are starting their new life together a long ways from Northern Michigan in California, where he is from. They had a lively reception with lots of big band, swing dancing and even a fun smoochin’ game! Instead of kissing whenever we would clink our glasses you had to get up and sing a love song at the open mic!

Luke and Rose, thank you so much for asking me to be your photographer. I had such a fun time. Blessings on your marriage!

Holly, 2013 Senior // Petoskey, MI

Last week I had the pleasure of taking Holly’s senior pictures. Holly is an amazingly gifted musician and songwriter with a cute little smile and beauuutiful blue eyes. Check these photos ouuuut! We started off with a drive in the country to my grandpa’s property to catch some of the late afternoon light, then headed to Petoskey’s waterfront where Holly wanted to do some shots on the docks overlooking the bay. P.S. Her mom is an amazing seamstress and handmade both her dresses. Talk about skill.
